Absolutely. A firewall is a tool which makes hacking more difficult, but a determined hacker and/or a careless user can get around them.
The user needs to keep his system updated with recent patches (both OS and firewall). In addition, you should have an antivirus package as well, since when you do something like download a file or even read email it is possible to allow malicious code onto your computer.
Security people say the greatest danger is still people having physical access to your computer. You need to make sure no one gets at the computer and works locally (for instance, disabling your firewall).
With that said, though, if you are careful and keep everything updates and don't download or install anything you haven't checked out first you should be pretty safe.

It all depends on the firewall. Use a good one to be sure you are protected. Here you have some free options:

some firewalls are not worth the bytes they take up on the hard disk,
Perhaps you have some 'cheating wife' spyware installed on the machine!
but if someone has physical access.. it's all fair game!

Don't fool yourself. Absolutely it is possible. They have to be pretty good. Believe me they are out there. If you just have a home computer, you may not be a major target. Check out this site on protecting yourself....

Yes, they can use a Sniffer program, and intercept your incoming & out going info... No fire wall can stop that, only an encryption program will keep them from reading the info.
