If you are refering to the canadian/american bovine the true name for the animal is bison. The buffalo comes from the african savana. But the females of both speices have horns, that are smaller than the the male's. I just thought I would add the bison/buffalo part cause alot of people mix up the 2 of them.

You have to be careful with your terminology here. You mentioned deer - deer do not have horns, they have antlers. Antlers are shed and regrown every year, whilst horns are permanent. As you rightly say, only male deer have antlers, except in reindeer (called caribou in America). This is the only species in which the female has antlers too, and hers are smaller than the male's. Deer belong to the family Cervidae. By the way, moose are a species of deer. Cattle, sheep, goats and the various species of antelope belong to the family Bovidae. Bovids have horns, not antlers. It's common in bovids for both sexes to have horns. In most cattle breeds, both sexes have horns, it's just that females' are removed for safety reasons. There are even a few breeds that have been especially bred not to have horns at all. Wild cattle, like bison, African buffalo and water buffalo, also have horns in both sexes. There are many species of antelope, such as wildebeest, topi and eland in which both sexes have horns, but there are some in which only the males do - kudu and impala are examples. There are various small antelopes called gazelles. In most of these, both sexes have horns, but the female's are tiny compared to the male's. It all depends on what the horns are used for. If they are mostly used for defence against predators, both sexes usually have them, because both sexes need to defend themselves. If they are used mainly for fighting for dominance amongst one's own species, only males tend to have them, because it's the males that fight for the right to mate with the females.
