I think the official cause was heart failure, but it's widely believed that years of alcohol and drug abuse accelerated his death.

No one knows for sure. No autopsy was ever performed so doctors never got a good look at him but heart failure was on the death certificate. The stories of how he died include:
He went to one of his favourite clubs in Paris where he then bought heroin, Od's in the club bathroom and was carried back to his flat where he was left in the tub. He walked all through the night and was found dead in the streets the next morning. The most readily excepted was that he returned to his flat late after seeing a movie. Complained that he wasn't feeling well where he was then found motionless in the tub with his arms on either side.

He didn't really die, he faked it because he was tired of being a rock and roll star, he's been living in South Africa as a diamond dealer under the name of Mr. Mojo Rising all these years.

Or a drug overdose, which ever you prefer.

Cannot add much ... Heart failure was credited with his demise, but it was pretty much expected, I imagine... Very sad situation, I really would like to have heard the music he would have written later in life... On my list of people I would like to become aquainted with when I get stiff...

The first answer got it correct. He also died in Paris, which is where he is now buried. He was a messed up man but he was great!
