can bettas do well in one gallon tanks?

The main argument for keeping bettas in such small containers is that, in the wild, they live in shallow rice paddies, and are used to not having any swimming space. While it is true that Bettas live in puddles during the dry season, the puddles are connected, allowing for a complete ecosystem. During the wet season, bettas have ample room for swimming. (Thank you Zoe for editing your post to add that almost word for word - AFTER I posted it).

These bowls also do not allow for proper temperatures. Bettas are native to Thailand where the climate is hot and moist. The ideal water temperature for the Betta is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The primary reason Bettas in small bowls are often listless is because the water temperature is too low. Although they can survive at lower temperatures, they become lethargic and may even refuse to eat.

The ideal betta habitat is at least a 5 gallon (10 or more is better) aquarium with a filter, aquatic plants, and a heater.

No :(
Other than goldfish, bettas are the most abused and misunderstood fish. Someone sometime decided that bettas are okay in tiny cups because they supposedly come from tiny puddles in the wild.
That isn't true - in the wild, they come from open areas of water, where they have large territories, with plants and rocks and wood and other fish. A tiny cup (and 1 gallon is tiny) is just ridiculous.

Think about it. You could survive in a tiny cold closet, right? Even if you didn't have a toilet... But you probably wouldn't live in there very long, OR be very happy. Same goes for a betta.

If you want to get a betta, please get at LEAST 5 gallons, and a FILTER, and a HEATER, and cycle the tank.

People put bettas in little one gallon bowls and wonder why they only live for a few months.

Your betta will look betta and be more active in 5gallons+. Plus, you can get tankmates, such as african dwarf frogs, or a school of neon tetras if you have a 10 gallon tank.

Please do right by your fishy :)

They can do well in one gallon tanks, but I have found they do better in larger tanks, just pay attention to other fish you have in there, for example, i have my male betta in a 20 gallon with 2 kuhli loaches as of current, but im planning on getting some other fish in there sometime.

Something to note about betta fish in community tanks though, many people will tell you stupid crap like it's not safe or possible, ignore that, my friend has one male guppy, zebra danios, tetras and whatever in like a 15 gallon, pretty squished, but even then, they get along famously.

yes, but bettas do NOT enjoy anything smaller than a gallon. it is false that they do better in small tanks. they live in rice paddies naturally, but that has a whole ecosystem, a tiny little bowl does not. bettas do best in a tank big enough for pants and a filter. but as long as you keep the water crystal clear and keep an eye on ammonia levels and pH levels ect... it will do fine, just no smaller than a gallon, levels of those things get high fast and stress out the betta causing him to get sick easily and depressed.

I live in Thailand and many people here keep bettas in small jam jars, etc. In the wild they live in the flood plains and the "puddles" they live in are connected for most of the year, and during the monsoon season they actually have quite a bit of space to swim in.

You can really notice the difference between fish kept in small containers and fish living in larger tanks. The more space they have, the healthier they will be... not to mention they will be more colorful and have a longer lifespan. These fish really like to have hiding places too, so they need some ornaments, rocks, etc.

Yes your betta will do just fine. Treat your betta as you would buy him toys, good food, treats, and a great living environment. We have 3 bettas in our household all fairly new. Un my 8 mos old grandsons Betta, Nemis he is red my 14 yr olds and Arogon PooBlu my fish which is a purplish blue. They are spoiled. I buy treats and I am always looking for something special for all 3.

Good Luck with your betta. He will live long as long as you make sure his water and food is always heathy

Yea I see alot of people put a betta in a glass plant bowl with a plant on top. It doesn't need much space, just some place to hide.
