How do you know if a worm is not wiggling backwards for the sake of it ???

That is the equivalent of crawling butt first toward a destination. In order to make tunnels and to get organic matter to eat, the worm has to go through the world head first. They don't starve themselves doing dumb stuff just for the sake of it.
