they aren't meant to clean your hands, but to sanitize them; that is, to kill bacteria. the problem with using them is that your hands naturally produce their own oils which act as a barrier to germs, so when you use the sanitiser, you strip your hands of their natural defence; it can actually make you more susceptible, which is why these products are not encouraged for use by the medical profession; more harm than good,; no substitute for soap, water, rubbing and taking time to do things right

It's not for cleaning your hands. You should always clean your hands with soap and water. Hand sanitizer disinfects and kills germs. For example, touching common areas like door handles, using pens, or someone else using your belongings you should sanitize after. It's kills any germs that could be transferred and if they're sick, you're killing what they could be passing onto you. I carry a bottle with me at all times, and since I've been using this, I rarely come down sick. :-)

They totally work. But, scientists are saying that since everyone is using these, certain strains of bacteria/viruses are becoming immune to the product. I would be intereseted to see what happens to these products in the next couple of years.
With these products, you should make sure you rub it in until it disappears. Some people like them, but i personally dont feel too clean using these in leu of handwash.

All the above answers are true. One item though. My internist was against sanitizers because if you don't use copious amounts of sanitizer you run the risk of mutating disinfectant resistant bacteria from the usual bacteria of the skin. Soap & warm water is best. My doctor was involved with CDC.

I don't think hand sanitizer is meant to remove dirt. You'd probably have to wipe it on a tissue to remove dirt. It's meant to disinfect so you don't spread germs. Surface dirt isn't anything to worry about.

Your hands should already be clean. This particular product is used to kill germs, not remove dirt.

I always see clinics and hospitals using them (they wash hands with soap and put it on after they wash their hands) so I am assuming it is safe. It kills the bacteria on your hand so in essence you will have clean dirt on your hand versus bacteria and dirt on your hand.

they clean the hands from most bacterias, but they are not better than soap and water, they are just for ppl who are on the move and want to eat summin or whatever, then they just clean their hands with it if there isnt anywhere else to do it and then it is safer to eat or somthing without washing your hands alot, but yes they do work.

If your hands are dirty you should wash them first then use the hand sanitizers. Why not carry around a pocket pack of sanitizing wipes(or baby wipes) to clean your hands then use the hand sanitizers

They are good but do not use them to replace a good hand washing. Also, those sanitizers only kill bacteria, they don't kill viruses...you need an antiviral cleaner for that such as lysol.
