I know, I know...it's the thought that counts...but picking up something from the gas station on your way over to the party is so low class and it's clear just how much thought was put into the gift (if that's whatcha wanna call it)...and what do you say?? "Gee, thanks, Sally...this lighter with flashlight boobs will really come in handy..."
Anyone else have these kind of family members or friends?

I'm busting a gut here reading all this! Which is usually what my mother and I do as the gifts at these parties are 'unveiled' from the grocery store bags...LMAO!!!

Yes, I do. My family is completely cheapskate-ish! My friends are a little better, they give each other gifts from Hallmark (i mean, its better than the 99 cent store!)...last year for christmas, my stepdad gave my stepmom a little mini plastic vase as big as someone's pinky finger with a little fake yellow daffodil in it (PLEASE! Come on!)...I know, she pretended to like it as they always do...and she gave my dad a pinwheel that said "#1 Hubby" on it (SO EMBARASSING!!)....my stepbrother gave my sister who is 19 a plastic music box that plays the first three notes of mary had a little lamb over and over again. the worst part is, my family ALWAYS leaves the price tags on their gifts, so it's obvious that it's cheap!!!!!!! PS. this year my stepmom told me she is giving my stepdad a pair of americn flag socks....omg. i can't believe this it sounds so much worse than it really is when it is typed outl

I never did, but my children did. Their grandmother (on their dad's side) used to get them about 20 or 30 different things each from the dollar store, so that it would look like they had a lot of presents to open. Instead, it was just a bunch of cheap junk that either broke immediately or was thrown away after a day because it was too stupid! If only their grandmother knew that they would have rather had 1 good gift instead!

OMG - I love the dollar store by my house! I bought 12 beautful long stem green tinted wine glasses that I use with my Christmas dishes every year. ($1 a piece). I always get so many compliments on them. I also got a beautiful 'silky' ivory Christmas runner and dress it up with a candles and a center piece - cost =$1). I once got a friend two adorable matching mini-teddy bears with moveable arms and legs - she absolutely loves them! cost = $1.
I also love their single bulb electric candlesticks - cost $1 apiece. They look beautiful in each of my windows and no one can tell where I got them from.
Finally - I usually buy the best Christmas jars to put my Cranberry Relish to give as gifts in. cost $1 each.
I love my Dollar store!!!!!!!! You can't by everything there, and I am not poor - just frugal and smart with my money. You can get some really great beautiful buys there if you hunt!

I once got a box of dirt while playing a White Elephant Christmas Present Game. The present I put in the pot was a 2 pound box of Sees Candy. Phooey.

Maybe you should make it clear you would rather not have gifts? It sounds like people are giving thoughtles gifts because they really don't want to give a gift. People who really care and want to give a nice gift will probably ignore you and still get you something.

Yes, from my ex-mother-in-law. And too much of it. It was just junk that sat around until I could discreetly dispose of it at a yard sale. One small useful gift is better than crap I don't need.

At least you get something... Many people don't get anything at all. If you don't like your presents you can always re-gift them. Really, it's not about the present, but attention - is what matters.
