My husband smashed his thumbnail at work a while ago with a hammer. His nail turned black and it still is. Now when he moves the cuticle he can see a little bit underneath it and it looks kinda weird. He's worried that his nail will fall off. Just part of the nail is black though. The upper right area of the nail is normal.
Does someone know what will happen with it? I'm so sorry for him cuz he's so worried. And if it comes off, will it grow back? I really doesn't look nice cuz he hit it real bad.
Thanx for help! :o)

he (basically) has a bruise under his nail. it should grow back as long as nail bed (the white half-moon piece at the base) is not too damage. slowly the bruise will work itself out as his nail grows...it will take months.

He may or may not lose the nail. The blacknesswill probably stay until the nail grows out. After a day or so, it won't hurt anymore.; but it will probably look like hell. Using ice right after injusry usually helps. just pad the nail with a bandaid and try to keep the nail intact as long as possible.
In the hospital, we used to heat a paperclip & touch it to the nail to make a small hole to let the pressure out, but I WOULDN"T RECOMMEND his for any amateur.

he may lose it and depending if the nail is damaged in a certain area he may not grow it back but more than likely he will grow it back. If it is painful he should go to the doctor so the dr can drain the blood out.

i smashed mine in a door it fell off but did grow back takes monthes though. it might just be blood under his nail if he can bare it bore a tiny hole in the nail to drain it that can save it falling off sometimes.

If the nail is bruised that badly you'll opt to work out a regular practitioner. rigidity will construct lower than the nail causing extreme discomfort. a regular practitioner can manage this with the aid of drilling into the nail to launch blood. you may want to do it your self with a sufficiently small drill bit, yet i does no longer advise it, quite in case you arent very experienced with powertools. bypass to a regular practitioner asap!
