If the car was first registered before 1973, you could run it on chicken sh** and still get a free tax disc.

It is just date of first registration, not fuel, be careful, classic diesels are pathetic, and classic transmissions just wont cope with diesel torque, and where will you find a suiable diff, You could end up with a 70 mph top speed and an engine which only lasts 5000 miles, Could be one hell of an expensive way to save a few bob.
I fancy a Triumpg GT6 with a Rover 218 turbo diesel, but even with an overdrive it will only do about 80 at peak revs 4000 whereas it has the torque to do 80 at 2 500 , the diff just aint available, unless a merc one or something could be grafted on.

If it was registered pre 1973 then yes it should still do so.You may take a hit on its value but if its one that is regularly modified i dont see much of a problem.
Remember that a diesel engine is usually slightly heavier than a petrol engine so you may need to uprate the front springs and possibly the brakes too.
Regularly modified classics?By that i mean such as the Morris Minor [All sorts of lumps from twin cam fiat engines to rover v8s have been persuaded into them. I suggest a 1527cc Peugoet with Marina discs and coilovers on the front] or Ford Escort Mk 2.
Lots of others to choose from too.
Sacriledge? Ahh its your car.

Why on earth would you want to ruin the character of a classic car by putting in a diesel engine?

You could put a v8 in and can change everything on the cars shell, remember to update the log book, and tell your insurance company, or you wont be insured.
