Well as a rule of thumb, don't use your DSL router as a substitute for a football by anymeans, but they can take a fair load of abuse. I do not reccomend testing its limits, but if it does happen to fall off of a stand, it will likely remain in tact and functioning.
Most of all the internal electronics are soldered down, so the real threat of it falling would be breaking the solder loose, cracking a circut board or transistor. Since they're so tightly packed together, no moving parts (motors or things of this nature) screwed down to the frame and soldered... they're quite hardy devices.
The more traumatic of a blow your router recieves the more likely you are to break it, but dont fret they can take the odd tumble :)

I negelected my DSL router so many times it is not even funny
Types of abuse:
1.The router was on a Carpet Floor. This made the router very hot, There was no preformance but it is not a good idea to overheat anything
2. My Cables are tangle up: I always end up droping or it falls and bangs against the case of my computer or the wall. I have a carpet floor so I guess it brased the impact. The router still works no cracks or anything so I guess it is pretty sturdy. The hight is a computer tall.
3. I leave paper or books on top of the router if I have no room: Again nothing wrong other then a heat issue.
Current Router Issues:
Internal Firewall Is fried. The router will crash and reset ever so often if I have the firewall on in the router. I have to use Program firewall.
Ok Status:
All 4 ethernet port works
Wireless works
Phone jack still works
Lights all work
Current Router: Westell 327W
I can not tell what broke the firewall it could be the drop or it could be the overheating but just becareful they can take some neglect.

First of all, it shouldn't need to be carried or handled that much. I assume that since it doesn't have any moving parts it'd be rather durable, but i wouldn't go smashing it with a hammer to see. Heat would be my biggest concern with something like this

There is very very little inside that is likely to be damaged unless the outer shell is. Hit it with a hammer it'll break, drop it from 5ft, I wouldn't worry.

If its a Westell 6100 used by Verizon, then it can barely handle any drops. They are PoS routers as far as impact. They do however work well if you don't ever bump/drop them.
