You better let us know what you are talking about? Most ships have an engine, some have several, and they can be powered by different energy sources. Have you ever heard of a sail boat? (Sail only?) how about sail with and auxiliary engine? What do you mean? Do you mean get underway? If a ship has only one engine and it is broken and there are no sails you had best be prepared to row. If it is a big ship you had better have big oars and lots of rowers like a slave galley. I mean you better make like really big oars like about 150 feet long and about 20 per side and about 30 people to each oar. so let us know what you mean. A ship may get underway by untying the lines, but it might only go where the wind and currents send it like into another ship or into the mud or beach.

Yes, bulk carrier ships sail with only one main engine.
These engines have massive horse power and can easily create thrust to move the ship.

yes the only reason for more than one is to get more speed or maneuverability. So if a ship with two loses an engine it will only be slowed down and will steer to one side that is corrected with the rudder. The steering problem is caused by the propeller pushing on one side and being idle on the other. The rudder is steered opposite to the way the ship pulls off course and will then straighten out. It should be noted that massive ships like super tankers have only one engine it's a massive engine but one none the less.

That depends on the ship. If the ship is just designed to sail with one engine then yes, But if it has a port engine and a starboard engine then it shouldnt but it can. the chances for blowing out one the engine that is working is greater.

A ship can sail as long as it has a sail. An engine is not required.

Yes, it can, but Safety Officials will not let a ship sail unless it is 100% operational

Technically, yes, if it has two engines, but if it is in port it will not be allowed to get underway unless both engines can be brought on line. If one engine goes down at sea, there is no choice but to continue on one engine.
