Note: Reformatting the hard drive will erase all information on it.
Do this: Place install disk 1 into cd drive. Start-up computer while holding down the C key on keyboard,this will tell the ibook to boot from the cd.At the install screen pull down menu select "disk utility" this will give you options to prepare the disk for the installation of the operating system. When finished,quit disk utility,and install the Mac os on your newly prepared hard drive.

Why do you need to format the Hard drive? All you need to do is an Erase and Install then update to the latest version.
