Both Avast and AVG are good choices. In deciding which one to choose, you need to know how they differ. Please read the following article which compares the detection rates and other features of the 3 most popular free antivirus program, which are Antivir, Avast and AVG.
"Review: Free Antivirus Software" -- written by Mary Landesman, about.com

Somethings you should consider. Grisoft's AVG has recently been upgrade from version 7.1 to 7.5 and by recent I mean this month. No extensive tests have been run its detection rate. In the past, AVG has the lowest detection rate of the three; however, it could have easily been improve with this latest version. In fact, I am eager to test it. It is a solid performer regardless of which version you use. AVG does not require a large amount of resources, which is mainly why people choose to use it. It is free forever and updating virus signatures in a cinch.
I do admire Avast, of the 3 it has the most features. It protects instant messaging, peer-to-peer file sharing, wireless networking, host intrusion detection and, of course, solid detection rates. If you use any of these, you should definitely consider Avast. But, i should warn you that you need to register every 3 months to continue using it.
Antivir has the best detection rate of the 3; however, it does not scan incoming e-mail messages - it does scan outgoing mail. Some people frown on it because of this deficit.
There are other free antivirus programs available. Some one mentioned AOL's Active Virus Shield and it is a good choice. But, it is notorious for using a great deal of resources and there are some privacy issues. The program periodically communicates with AOL's server. AOL claims that the information collected is used to improve their products but it could just as easily be monitoring your movements on the Internet. I have my reservations about AOL.

I prefer avg free. I had avast at one time, but I found it difficult to understand on how to scan my computer...plus it was not scanning all of my files nor was it telling me why.
If you go to their free help forum you will see where numerous people have had false positives for Trojan's...you will find very few post like that at avg. I've been using avg for quite sometime now and have never had any problems with it.
Hope that this helps you!

Also it took avast 3 hours to scan my computer...it only takes 36 minutes with avg and it doesn't slow my computer down a bit.

Neither. Go with AOL's Active Virus Shield. It's based on Kaspersky's virus engine, which has been shown in tests to be the best one out there. Plus, unlike Kaspersky, AOL's AVS is free. All that is required is an e-mail address for the activation key.

You can see the results of a very extensive test here: http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Both are excellent free AV programs. I would download one and try it for a week or so, then remove it and try the other, then make a decision.

avg
it's the only one (of the 2 that I have) that actually tells me when it sees a virus. The other one just does nothing (piece of crap).
