Its been a pagan tradition for a very long time I believe but I think they were first brought to Britain from Germany by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.

All the northern countries having large forests of pine trees covered with snow in winter. This is a Pagan tradition of a very ancient religion long before christianity brought by the Romains.
This Pagan tradition took place at the Winter Solstice on the 23rd of December. Later, Christians brought that it was the date of the birthday of Christ and added a christmas tree and snow to the crib of Jesus. So that the Pagan Yule could continue to be in the same time as the Christian Christmas.

Pagans did, its a symbol of continuing life in winter time along with holly. Christmas is more directly pagan by far than Halloween which is one reason why some Christians won't celebrate it. That and the commercialism

It was Nebuchadnezzar Mother that started putting gift under a evergreen tree after his death and it became a sort of tradition in her land and just spread from there. And if you ever read a bible you should know who I am talking about.................... But from certain records that is suppose to be how it happen. There is another story out there that says that ancient men and woman use to do that same thing when they asked certain trees to be fruit-full in their seasons. Also it was strictly a pagan religion that was allow in by the Catholic Church and re-named all saints day to increase their converts, and it spread to all churches minus a few in time....................

I think it came from some kind of pagen tradition. The idea of a tree was then brought to Britain by Prince Albert- Queen Victorias husband.

Here's an "eye-opener"! The "Christmas Tree" has it's 'roots' (LOL) in a 4000 year-old Mesopotomian custom...
