So heres the deal, I got a nice laptop from my friend for free because he broke the sound card's line out (he's a DJ) and I was wondering if it is possible to turn the microphone input into a line out by changing some sort of setting / installing software, or am I going to have to pull it apart and re-solder it back together (last resort because I tried this already and its hard because of the way they packed it in there its almost impossible to get to)?

NO, you cannot.

there is no physical switch or software setting to swap the mic in to line out. a mic input must receive signal froma source like a mic or an audio source but not the other way. same goes for the line out, it only gives signal out ( never force to inject signal to it because it will fry the internal amp.)

its almost impossible to swap the connectors from these notebooks as they are so compact.

if you really need a to have a line out, just buy a usb based soundcard. you can also buy a pc card based sound card. it will definitely work. if you will just dont forget to disable the notebooks built in soundcard so you wont have problems/conflicts installing the new one.

there are a lot of usb and pc card based soundcard from creative, turtle beach, etc...

give it a try.

depends on the sond card and the chip set. some soundcards allow you to use the mic in as a line out. if the chipset is realtek then you may be able to go into the sound cards actual settings (not via control panel sounds) i mean the software designed for your sound card.
there is no set rule. you could alwasy see if the laptop is still under warranty and see if the manufacturere will service the thing.
even if it is out of warranty they may offer you an out of warranty repair for a few pounds or so. you have nothing to loose by firing off an email to the companies technical support website. they will be happy to help i'm sure. failing that see www.dabs.com and get an external audio system see the details below taken from the dabs webnsite. this is just the first external sound card i found listed, there seems to be more. so good luck and hey for £30 or less delivered at a guess it can't be bad when you got the lap top for free. you never know the DJ friend may want it back to use 5.1 surround sound at his venues.

hope this helps.

those are the inputs. it is frequently written under a port indicating audio enter. mic - lessen - line could advise that the enter can accommodate the two an XLR enter for a microphone, or a customary tool enter port (3/8") (aka guitar cable)

No there is nothing you can do, it's in the nature of the hardware that the mic socket is an input socket only.

no chance you're goona change it. I'd suggest replacing the sound part, or just getting a manual and resoldering it.

only if you are trying to re-invent the speaker, the mic is designed for transmitting into a unit, not receiving from it
