I´ve tried reducing the image size from 300 pixels/inch to 72pixels/inch, and then re-saving it (Save As). But it hasnt seemed to work yet...any ideas on what im doing wrong?

If you're reducing from 300 to 72, you are reducing the resolution. You probably won't see it on your monitor, but it will show on your printout, if you print it. It should also reduce the size of your file considerably. If it isn't reducing file size, make sure you don't have file size linked (see the chain beside the boxes you type your numbers into). If you have a maintain clicked, it will stay the same size numerically, it will just vastly increase the size of the image.

there is an image reduction function, somewhere under the image menu. save before messing around in case you press the wrong button
