Should you decide to paint, floor paint looks good. I did experiment with a durable finish and I put several layers of--floor finish for heavy traffic areas-- on top of the paint; it holds for the last 10 years and is easy to clean and you can easily touch it up-dries in 1 hr. and smells o.k.

You can carpet, or put down linoleum or vinyl flooring.
Is the floor level? Is it a nice quality wood? If it is a nice wood, I'd just sand and finish it. Wood floors are very valuable these days.
If it's ugly wood, but level, tile would be a nice thing, or you could put down a wood laminate. You also have to think about what the room will be used for. Some flooring options are more practical for a living room than a kitchen or bathroom.
Hope this helps!

my wife drove me crazy for months about painting the kitchen floor. I've laid hundreds of squares of tile and lino but paint, never. finally I said O.K. She even had a pattern picked out. Squares, foot on a side. Black and white.
It took time and almost led to divorce but we finished in three Weeks, 200 square feet black and white squares and they're beautiful.

I painted our bathroom floor white. Looks so good I am thinking of trying it in other parts of the house. It'll bring in lots of light and look fresh and clean.
The only thing I find is that I got to paint the boathroom floor every couple of months!
But by golly it's worth it!

There are many options.Lay a pad and new carpet over it,lay lanoleum or congoleum. You can always take this up and do the sanding ,and refinish the wood later.

Paint the floor one color, let it dry. Place tape in a pattern you like and paint over it with a different color and remove the tape. Now you have a custom design of your own and much to talk about when friends or family come over. They will all like it.

Look into stick down tiles..... they are so pretty, not too expensive, easy to lay, and they are easy to clean, just sweepo and mop.
