Harry Truman didn't "want " to become President. The last elective office Truman actively wanted was Missouri Senator, which he achieved.
In 1944, he was a very reluctant candidate for Vice President to replace Henry Wallace. He ran only at the insistence of Roosevelt and other party leaders.
Of course Truman succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of FDR, and AFTER that he actively wanted re-election in 1948. He ran,probably, because he felt he could do the best job (better than Dewey anyhow) and because the Office seems to have a hypnotic effect, almost, on people who hold it or are near to it. It was Lincoln who said of his chances of nomination before the 1860 convention, "The taste is in my mouth a little."

He never wanted to be president, the Democratic leadership wanted him to be vice-president for FDR's fourth term since they new FDR was in ill health. FDR was opposed to Truman and only reluctantly agreed to Truman. The leadership thought the Truman would do what they want, they were wrong. He was a great president, that from a Republican.
