Probably the same thing that's causing the decline of the US. A combination of complacency, believing your own PR, and failing to maintain an educated workforce.

Ultimately, the Romans got soft and lazy and accustomed to having slaves and serfs do all their work for them, while their emperors were feeding and entertaining them with bread and circuses.

But, as is usually the case in situations like that, eventually the Roman citizen got so accustomed to luxury and leisure that there was nobody left who was willing to fight to defend the empire.

When things reached that pass, as is also usually the case in situations like that, it took only a small push from the next barbarian horde to bring the whole thing down.

And indeed America has that in a large way and is on the downward spiral to "empire destruction". Sadly.
