Jeremy Brett. In the end, his mind and health were so far gone he actually believed himself to be Sherlock Holmes! You can't get a more convincing performance than that. He also managed to get the intense energy and mood swings of the character, which you see in the original books. The other actors, good as they are, always seemed rather cold and detatched, which is the absolute opposite of the Holmes character.

As good as Rathbone was, Brett Became Holmes, he embodied the character, more than any actor before or since.

brett, not only because of his ability, but also because that version was the truest to the character ever filmed... cushing was not a good pick... rathbone was good, but he hammed it up a bit and never showed the angst ridden side of holmes... lee was pretty good...
worst probably had to be matt "max headroom" frewer (sp?)
