They may not give them away. Most just throw them in the dumpster which is awful since they could be used either by schools that dont have textbooks or others. Your best bet would probably be to network with some teachers. There are meetup/networking groups for teachers ---meetup.com is one place to look. If you have an in they could let you know. Also, typically schools get new books between june-sept for the new year. You could try to call the schools but they will probably say they cant give them to you.

ask the school. though, a lot of schools hold on to their text books until they're falling out of the covers. looking on amazon or a teacher's store would probably be a better bet.
