diminished and augmented chordal harmonies....eg, increasing the pitch of the first note by a semi tone,in an augmented chord.
And reducing the pitch of the last note by a semi tone in a diminished chord, also the use of sevenths, fifths and pentatonics have all come into use in jazz over the 20th century , hope this helps!!

_lots and lots of research and reading and learning to jazz music
_paying alot of attention to the playing articulation of the players
_time, and money, and your soul (meaning you got to find "it" when playing any kind of music)
