It sounds like a jumping spider. There are many kinds of jumping spiders but the most common in the U.S. are black. They for the most part catch their prey by jumping on them rather than by using a web to snare them.

By the way, they are harmless to humans.

i thought jumping spider too but mine are usually 1/2 inch or less, built very low to the ground (looks like it's crouching), with relatively large eyes placed in the center of the head, (kind of looks like a tiny sand crab, at leasr more like it than other spiders)
