It's south of Pennyslvania, east of Kentucky and Ohio, and west of Maryland and Virginia. West Virginia was part of Virginia from 1617 to 1863 - they split off from Virginia during the Civil War, and rejoined the union as a seperate state. They remained a seperate state after the war.
