oh my gosh people "the moon only has an effect on our tides" bla bla bla THAT NOT TRUE! the moon keeps us on our axis, if we has no moon our axis could move 90 degrees! that would melt the polar ice caps, make the sahara a winter tundra and make the poles deserts!!, it would flood the oceans! we would die!!

No way....there are serious implications for earths spin stability. The moon assists in the formation and maintenance of the earths magnetics field. The moon helps maintain the fluidity of the mantle/core. It helps with day length regulation. Its caught loads of space debris that would have hit us otherwise. It's responsible for tides. A whole raft of plants and animals have evolved to need it and benefit from its presence - women too. A whole heap of stuff. Life as we see it today would not have evolved without it.

If it suddenly vanished over night we'd have major climate change effects, flooding, extinction events and god only knows what else.

But we are losing it, slowly. Its receeding away from us at a rate of about 4 inches per year. So one day, a long time from now the moon will be lost.

Certainly. The only present effect of the moon is to cause tides, and those clearly are not essential. But, it is possible that the huge tides existing during the earth's early existence, when the moon was much closer than it is now, were involved in the initial creation of life.

No. Without the moon, the earth's climate would be in such a state of flux, that a sustainable envoirnment would be hard to keep. Also, the tides rely on the moon. And the Earths orbit and rotation would be thrown out of ballance, and may even cause our orbit arround the sun to degrade.

On technical terms no. Our planet has grown to need the moon. For example, there are many animals out there that are nocturnal. So these animals would never die because their eyes are sensitive to the light. The moon also effects out tidal system and parts of the world would go under water.

Hard to say for sure... we know the moons gravity effects our tidal system...

so maybe habitable... but life on earth would probably be a lot more different without one...

The moon has protected us from many devastating meteorites and comets over the millenia.I think it also stabilises our angle of tilt without which we couldn't live because it regulates our seasons. If the Earth just spun on its axis it would be uninhabitable furnace hot desert on one pole and freezing cold on the other

theres a theory that without the moon as a comet and meteor absorber and a stabilizer there would be no life on this planet

no, without the moon, the atmosphere would be like Venus, apparently.

Without the moon, would I still be able to enjoy a nice crusty loaf with a smattering of Brie?
