the big bang is what created us all

many experts believe we are in some giant cycle. after the bang, we have been expanding as a universe at a slowing rate. eventually, scientists beleive the matter will begin to shrink back to a singularity and eventually become so dense, it will explode again.

Galactic mega-black holes may or may not be the beginning of that very process.

so to answer your question, before the big bang, was a shrinking universe growing ever and ever dense

It's impossible to say, because the laws of physics break down in a singularity, and at the time of the Big Bang, the entire universe was a singularity. That means we have no way to define what effects, if any, earlier happenings could have on our universe. Some scientists refer to the Big Bang as the beginning of time, but what it really is is the beginning of observable time. It's possible that it really was the beginning of time. It's also possible that there was another universe before us, whose destruction provided the energy for the Big Bang. Pretty much any other scenario you can come up with is also possible.

There was nothing before the big bang. "Before" is a time related concept, and since "time" started at the point of the big bang there cannot be a "before". It's a difficult concept to get your head round, but it makes sense if you think about it.

Lots of ideas... it could be that our universe is one of many other universes... M-theory (part of string theory) states that giant cosmic membranes collided and caused big bang... our universe also could be in a continous cycle of big bangs and big crunches... no one knows for sure yet.

Despite the fact that I am neither religous or a believer in God, my best guess is God's asshole.

Because, on the day the Universe was created God had a bit of an upset tummy. When He farted, there was a touch of diarrhoea mixed in with it and, Voila! - we came to be.

Hence the phrase, "In the beginning there was the Word.
"And that Word was 'Oops'....".

Someone lighting the blue touch paper and standing well back?? Maybe you should read the book of Enoch or Genisis. I am a total non believer, but some of it does actually make sense.

The big silence. But God created that too.

alot of people think space is forever expanding, or expanding but slowing, or even shrinking. some scientists actually think the universe is not slowing down or shrinking but expanding at an ever faster rate and eventually will rip everything apart into a black nothingness.. believe it or not ;)

A big black hole with enormous gravitational energy that held
all together. The rest is another story.
