Normally a properly adjusted gas flame will burn blue. If you have a nice blue flame it only needs to be high enough to keep the thermocouple heated enough to allow the main valve to open when heat is called for.
Good luck

Generally the pilot light is only 1/4-1/2 inch. To work properly adjust your temp on tank. Should be 140-160 degrees to run effeciently. If you have low, med, high etc....... Then adjust and run hot water, fill glass, and use a meat thermometer to see how hot your water is. Adjust from there.

The one that we have is about 1/2" high. Some are more and some are less. The size really should not matter much. It is only there so that it is available to restart the unit as heat is "called for". Have a happy holiday!!

About the size of your pinky. If it lights your gas line is not plugged. If it goes out, the control valve may be bad.

You should just see it, enough to not burn with a black smoke.
