Surprisingly little, people need to realize that the KKK was at its most powerful during the 20's. That is not to say that they did not bribe politicians or that there were not KKK members holding positions, it just was not that predominant in POLITICS.

Actually none. The KKK did not become functioning until Reconstruction, when it came into existence in reaction to the perceived increase in power among black sharecroppers after the Civil War had been over by a decade.
For a highly recommended book read: "The Strange Career of Jim Crow".

The American Civil War was from 1861 to 1865. The KKK began in 1866. So it didn't exist during the Civil War.

A lot of effect. The're were elected officials and even sheriffs who were in the KKK and needed the influence of KKK to be elected. It was a political machine and millions of people were in the KKK. Even Governors and Senators, this cause people in the South to believe it was okay to be in this group since my Governor is in it. Sadly, the conservative Democrats were usually in the South and some of them had alliance with the KKK. The liberal Democrats in the North were against this but usually turned back on this issue. Their power waned in the 20th century and now there are only a couple of thousands and they don't have political power.

None during the civil war. Afterwards, however, the Klan became very powerful, and popular. It was able to push through the Jim Crow Laws at the state level. At it's peak during the 1920s, it had elected officials at every level of government: local, state, federal, even the US Senate and House.

The KKK wasnt formed until some time after the civil war
After that for the next 80 years or so it was almost impossible to get elected to public office in some few southern states without the support or approval of the KKK

The opposite of the intended, I'm sure.
The KKK only served to get national empathy for southern blacks.
