If I submit a manuscript to a publisher, how do I protect it from being poached by the publisher.

Just make sure it's a respectable publisher and not a scam. Any good publisher won't poach your book.

They don't do that. It is much too easy to prove your case and the negative effects will far out weigh the possible advantages to publishers. Just go through reputable people and you won't have to worry. If you still feel nervous, send yourself a copy of your manuscript in the mail and never open it. As long as it stays sealed, it will be admissible in any court because of the date stamped on the postmark, which will be BEFORE their publishing date.

have it copywrited through the state before you send it to the publisher...
