Okay. Last year, around this time we had this horrible smell in our bathroom. At first we thought it was just that our septic tank was getting full so we had it pumped. That didn't help. So my father replaced a seal around the toilet. That didn't help either. He eventually ended up replacing the entire toilet. The smell stayed and gradually went away towards the end of March. We forgot about it, until it returned last week. It smells horrible and exactly like it did last year. It's kind of hard to determine where it is coming from bt it seems like this certain part of the wall. Before last fall, we had the back of our house sided and we figured that the smell was coming from a dead animal that had been sided into the wall. However, it was gone all summer and then recently returned. We live in a log cabin so it's going to be a real difficult to take out the wall. Is there any way for us to pinpoint the source of the smell, a suggestion as to what is might be and how to get rid of it?

The bathroom is right off our kitchen, which is where everyone walks into the house. The smell is pretty embarassing and we have visitors alot. Shutting the door just makes it about a million times worse when you actually do have to go into the room and it's too cold to leave the window open. Candles help a little but not much.

Lol and about the siding of a log cabin.... The part we got sided got alot of weather and caused the wall to rot a little. It's not towards the road or anything so no one sees and my mom didn't want my father up on a ladder trying to get out the bad logs.

You added siding to a log house? If that is the case, check to see if they accidently covered up your vent stack for your plumbing. This would cause a gas back up from the sewer line. Also do you have a drain or sink which you only use in the summer months? If so not running water into this drain will let the P trap run dry and allow gasses to back up as well.

Hope this helps, seen it happen before, used to be plumber.

How far from the house is the septic tank ? it may not be covered enough with soil. We had this problem everytime someone flushed the toilet it forced some smell out the top of the tank . Bringing in some more topsoil solved the problem .Or your pipes may not be designed correctly.

I know someone who had a similar problem like this as well. What it turned out being was whomever first installed the bathroom had a 'fan' that was 'flowing' into the cement wall (the wall behind the bathroom's tiled wall). What happened in the end, they renovated the bathroom. ...

I would guess you have a plugged vent line. A plumber will run a snake down the vent on the roof and unplugged it, This sure sounds like it. If not, he can take a look around to see what he thinks.

What is stranger is that you do not become desensitised and can still smell it . It is most likely the sewer discharge joint under the toilet that is cracked , sometime you cannot tell until you take it apart the cracks are soo fine

Hire a smell inspector. There are people with a blessed smell ability that can pinpoint the problem. depending on where you live, it might be hard or easy to find one.

this will sound wierd, but maybe it's coming from your drain in the sink and not the toilet or wall. we had a stench from ours and some hot water then bleach cleared it up. we have to do this every couple of months.
good luck.
