For those who have read tamora pierce, I would like a simliar setting to her tortall world, probably in far south like her short story "Student of Ostriches" with magic ect. (but not called 'the Gift', that's been used far too much)

I dont know about her but the master of sci-fantasy/fiction (he's in a class of his own really) is Ray Bradbury. Read some of his stuff and it'll lead you to some weird and incredible realms.

Don't steal settings! If you mean, "man-dominated society with temperate climate, magic, and weird monsters," go for it, but if you mean "A man dominated society with a powerful empire to the south, many odd islands in the sea to the west, magic called "the Gift," and bizarre creatures which are immortal unless they are killed which are escaping from the place the gods live," don't do it.

You could write a story about how a "proper" young woman feels about her sister running off to be a knight/other manly profession, for example, if Alanna or Keladri had a sister. So often stories are told centered around the rebel.

Why don't you look around you and find something that screams at you to tell its story. eg: a flower that has never flowered before could be seeking help for its dying queen.
Look inside your self I bet that you have got a wonderful imagination. DON'T try and copy someone elses style of writing set your own and let your pen or PC fly.
( Have you got a favorite soft toy? maybe you could tell their story!!!) Good Luck LeeA
