Well, I know that it is practically impossible to fully protect yourself on myspace, so I was a little more than worried when one of my friends got one.

I know I cannot ask her to shut it down completely, but are there any ways she can better protect it? Security programs or something of the like?

I'd really appreciate it if you all could give me some sites with something to add added security to myspace, or just basic dos and donts for me to email to her.

I'm not trying to be over-protective, and I don't want people thinking I'm infringing on her right to do what she wants with her myspace, I just want her to be able to do what she wants SAFELY.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not quite sure what you are asking?

There's no real way to add security to a Myspace account. The best type of defense is to have a strong password.

If you are talking about making sure that your friend stays safe with her Myspace, then you should make sure that there is no personal information on the website. Don't put your address, phone number, social security number, or credit card number on any of the "networking" websites. Do not just your complete name (there can be a gray area around just using your first name, or a nickname, but if in doubt, don't do it.) Don't put up pictures of things that could come back to haunt you. Just make sure that you don't put up things that can lead to someone finding out where you are or who you are.

Yes, there is a danger that you can get stalked on Myspace, but I don't think that it's so great that you should bar yourself from it. If you just be smart and put up only what is safe to put up, you should be safe.

In addition to ;P's responce, don't put any personally identifying information on your page. This includes:
Last Name
Phone Number
email Address
home address
IM Screen Names
Places of employment
schools

Now I'd say some of them are a little over kill but you friend has to decide what level of information she wants to put out in the world.
The thing to keep in mind about the internet is anyone in the world can get the info so you need to decide what your personal comfort level is with exposing information.

I dont know of any sites that are made to protect a myspace, but I would recomend that she put all of her settings on private and that she only talk to and add people that she knows.

You really can't do anything. Give as little info as possible and be careful. Or stay way from myspace.

Tell her to keep her profile on private, and tell her to be careful of what personal info she gives out.
