I'm a Muslim.

In Islam, frankincense and myrrh has no importance whatsoever, religiously of course. Muslims don't need frankincense and myrrh to get a prayer going.

But ancient Muslims do use them to make the mosques smell nicer and pleasent as buildings during those times smell "clay"ish and "wood"ish.

Nowadays, mosques are perfumed by any perfumes that are pleasent. You can find some poor community mosques sometimes use baby powder, and rich community mosques sometimes use rose-smelling perfumes.

The only significance of frankincense and myrrh I can think of is that much of it came from the Arabian Peninsula. The trade in these two commodities brought traders through Mecca, and took Muhammad to various places around the region while working as a merchant and trader with his wife, Khadijah.

I'm not a religious scholar but i can guess...

Jesus is seen as a prophet to followers of the Islamic faith and at his birth the wise men gave him gold, frankincense, and myrrh as gifts. Perhaps modern muslims give these gifts to thier prophets or preists as gifts out of wisdom.

You can try searching Islam and Frankincense on www.wikipedia.com
