I was told that Joplin used to be the homosexual capital of the world kind of like todays St Francisco. Is this true? If so why was it so popular and why is it so dead now?

I've heard that too, and have lived in Joplin my whole life and have never seen any signs to support it. My uncle is gay, and he moved to Omaha not long after he graduated high scool because it sucked. The one gay bar that was here closed down also. A lot of people around Joplin are hicks, and homophobic. I've never known it any other way. The place could use some culture.

That's news to me. I've never even heard of it before right now and I tend to be quite good with "gay" history.
