I download hard to find music from soulseek and put it on my mp3 player. I've got about 500 songs. I just want to know if I'm going to get into trouble, or if I'm just paranoid.

If you don't already have a paid for copy of the song, such as on an album you own or if you downloaded a song that you paid for previously and still have the album or file, then it is perfectly legal to download a back-up.

If you don't have the song, yes it would be illegal to download from any non-authroized source (The Record Label). Even if you don't put it on anything or never even listen to it, it's still a violation of copyright law.

Unless you download a really large ammount of songs at the same time, you probably won't get caught. Cases like that are hard to prosicute and the RIAA has focused more on shutting down and disabling P2P services such a KaZaa and Limewire. And also flooding popular searches with fake songs.

So, it's not really a huge worry. Just don't go overboard on downloading.

*edit* People do and have been prosicuted, though. It's a crime and if you commit it, you should be ready to take responsability for your actions.

Harder to find stuff is much less likely to get anyone's attention and you really don't have that many songs.

If the song is copyrighted, it's illegal. If it's not, they can't sue. Just about every major artist copyrights their songs, though I have heard of some giving away free songs to get people interested.

Don't worry about it, no one is going to put you in jail or even fine you for downloading, they would bust the tracker, not you.
