No. I'm a teacher. At my school, high school & Jr High kids get paddled for using cell phones in class, mouthing off, skipping detention, disrespect, stuff like that. And it is always 3 swats or less. Usually 3.

The thing about any type of punishment is that there is a lesson there for you. What, if anything did you learn from you punishment? You must be in a private school where they have the permission from your parents to discipline you. If you are not, then this opens a whole new door and it is illegal. But in the end the lesson is that there is punishment for violatiing, in your case, the dress code. When we break the rules, we sometimes get away with it, but eventually, we do get caught.

In several states corporal punishment is still allowed in public shools. In some cases, there is a stated policy that it will be assumed that the school can use corporal punishment unless the parents sign a form indicating that they won't allow it. Your principal is unlikely to have done it if it wasn't allowed. It is still legal though no one really thinks it is the best way to handle things.
At least it is over with quickly.

In The United Kingdom it is illegal. So your principal is in big trouble. Talk to your parents, anyone. You must report this.
However if you live in the USA it varies form state to state. There is a map explaining where it is legal on the following website http://www.stophitting.com/disatschool/facts.php
Make sure you read the student guidebook, school rules or whatever. See if it says something about corporal punishment. Does it state anything about which offenses are punishable in this way, any forms that must be filled out, must your parents be notified, does there have to be a witness etc. If these rules were broken, report it. Complain. Sue.
Good luck.

It's actually not against the Constitution to paddle kids. The Supreme Court ruled in a case in the 80s or so - the reasoning was that the Eighth Amendment applies only to convicted criminals, not high school students who break rules!
Many states do have rules against it now, but it would not be illegal to paddle students otherwise.

It's still legal. It shocked me when I found out, but when I moved from Texas to Mississippi in my junior year, the school I went to in Mississippi padled people. My Mississippi studies teacher would walk around the room with a padle and take people out in the hallway and use it. My parents signed the form saying that I couldn't be padled though. It is illegal in some places, but it's legal in others. I say do something about it if you can. It should be made so it's illegal everywhere. At least maybe you could get it so they could have a list of people that aren't allowed to be padled.

I almost did in elementary school when we moved to Tx for 2 years. That made my mom move back RIGHT away! It was legal there when I was 7. I'm 29 now, I don't know how laws are anymore.

you must be in a private school, right? That is not allowed in public schools any more. Although when I was in school they tried to have the 6'5'' ex-cop give me ten whacks for calling him a wimpy S.O.B. to his face. When I didn't yell he wanted to exceed the 5 whacks to give me more. When my Dad explained he wore out 5 belts a year on my and my older brothers' rear ends he just laughed and said he would get it changed to that we would feel it. What we got whacked with is a long plywood board with holes in it so as not to leave marks, just hurt, most people I would guess. But that was over 40 years ago, they don't allow that stuff today.

You are not the only one, I am certain. Just be thankful these are not the Medieval times when Thumbscrews and Trepanning were in vogue.

Noooo, at my school they have corporal punishment, but you have to have parental permission. Also, most Catholic schools still take part in it.
