I'm talking about the government as it is right now... not how you would want it to be...on a state and federal level

to me, it seems conservatives are... let me explain

conservatives, in general, seem to be against the very idea of taxes, which is a major foundation of our government, they are against huge programs that have been instituted like welfare, medicaid, social security and the public school system.

Liberals seem to be against several programs, but the programs that they seem to be against are more minor programs like warrantless wiretapping. Maybe corperate welfare...

what do you guys think?

didn't our forefathers want free speech and understood it's importance all the more, in light of the situation they were in before the Revolution?

My opinion:
A conservative, by definition, is against government in general. They realize that government is a necessary evil, but it should be limited and constraints should be instituted to prevent it from becoming oppressive or tyrannical.
A liberal, on the other hand, believes that government is the solution to all society's problems. Therefore to a liberal, the larger the scope of government control over our lives, the better.

Note that these ideologies have little or nothing to do with the parties in the USA known as Republicans and Democrats. It is true that conservatives in general gravitate to the Republican party and liberals to the Democrats, but both of these parties seem more interested in the preservation of party power than in passing policies in the best interest of the general populace.

So to answer your question, true conservatives are more against the government.

Kermit, you are so off on so many points, I don't know where to begin.

1. And Democrats, grabbing control of the House isn't part of THEIR desire to have a 1 party government?

2. If we are becoming a theocracy, please tell me which religion is winning. The President has revealed his religious beliefs because it was apparently very important during the election, and it is such a straw man to suggest that this nation is becoming "more Christian" as a result.

3. Conservatives are shredding the Bill of Rights? Give me a break. What do you think your so called "imagined threats" are? Ever see justice in a foreign country?

4. Universal Healthcare will bankrupt the system. If you can show me ANY industry that has done better providing services to people OVER THE PRIVATE SECTOR, please enlighten us all. Countries that have Universal Healthcare have a waiting list the size of John Kerry's rhetoric.

5. Home Schooling is "all the rage" because of the teachers unions allowing for more pay and less work. I'm sure we all like to Blame Bush for it (how typical), but there's also a lot of corruption at the state level, the county level, and the district level before it ever reaches the individual schools.

Want the public school system to work? Get all of the illegals out of them - then we'll have room, money, resources, classroom sizes and situations where learning can actually take place. Until then, people are free (and should) to strive to get their kids the best education possible - and yes, the government should help them.

It has nothing to do with the color of skin or financial stability of the child. How sad that you find it necessary to resort to racism and class warfare. It has to do with the fact that public schools have high school graduates that can't write a proper business letter or do Algebra.

Our forefathers would have killed you for talking against your own country, like the liberals do today. With no apologies or reprocussions. Yes, kiss the forefathers of this nation goodbye, indeed!

Well, it seems to me that neither have the edge over the other.

Conservatives are for lower taxes, but we don't see that happening in the political party. Same with enforcing immigration laws: They aren't doing anything about it. The only championing I see is partially for support of the 2nd Ammendment, which, while not addressed properly, isn't ignored either.

Then you have the liberals, who want to give tax breaks and taxpayer subsidized benefits to people who aren't even in this country legally, and who lower themselves so far that they have to start every sentence with "Bush sucks because..." which is annoying, because I can no longer decipher between someone's ranting and an actual argument. I've just tuned out.

But when your country is in a war, fair or not, wrong or right, you stand behind your gawddamm country regardless of who is calling the shots. There is time for "that was wrong, that was right" later. You fight and defeat the enemy, so you can at least go back and HAVE the discussion amongst yourself later.

Democrats assist with rallying against the war more (again, wrong or right), which makes America look divided to the rest of the world. That is "against" America, even moreso than an "unjust war".

Neither. I think both sides have good intentions, and both are successful at different things at different times in history. For example, Clinton's restructure of the welfare system and Reagan's work during the Cold War. And both sides failed miserably at certain things. Cases in point: LBJ's Great Society and W's No Child Left Behind.

Conservatives are no more or less against taxes than liberals against, say, the military. It's just each believes the taxes or the military be cut.

Well let me say this...Hmmm....OK, I'm all for the corporations and not the government. Corporates are labeled as crooked. They are they steal money, however, the government is the biggest crook around, AIDS conspiracy, and drug smuggling in and out of our country, you name it. I believe in paying off our national debt and improving our economy. Based on my thoughts what would you say I am a conservative or a liberal? Or an in between? Corporations expand and make people's pockets bigger. Government holds you down and give you just enough to survive. I think big. I want a piece of that American Dream. Besides, Government is a secret society dealing with Free masonry and all that crap! I don't need the government. I'm not a Free mason either.

Liberals and here's why:

Could Lincoln had successfully kept the Union together at such a dire time if there was this hateful bias that is attacking Bush?
How about FDR when he had to imprison Japanese Americans? The media has gotten out of control. Let it be like it used to be and let the government do it's job without criticism and the media do it's job - report on it.

Privacy is not a gaureented right in the constitution regarding the wiretapping.

All politics is local. The only difference between the two parties right now is one will do what ever the polls say is the right thing or popular thing to do (i.e. Dems) the other seems hell bent on dragging us into whatever conflict supposedly fights terrorism (Rep). I think both are completely out of touch with the typical American as the middle class loses more and more ground to the wealthy and the poor keep getting poorer.

Actually the conservatives are working hard against our government. #1 they want a one party system -- not really a democracy, #2 they want one religion to be exalted by the governement --- welcome to a theocracy, #3 they don't want the government to do anything for people except give them tax breaks and spend gazillions of dollars on unnecessary military toys --- cause it puts so much money in the hands of corporate America -- which is where their real allegiance lies. #4 they are willing to shred the Bill of Rights (except for #2) to guarantee their safety from all the imagined threats out there. #5 Universal health care is only good enough for Iraqis --- go figure, #6 Home Schooling is all the rage with these folks --- that's what happens when you desegregate the schools --- of course the conservatives don't even want their kids in school with white kids of different religious faiths.

Kiss the America of our forefathers goodbye.

The "radicals" at both ends of the political spectrum.
The in betweens....I don't worry about them.
American politics have always been somewhat contentious and divided. That is the way it is supposed to be.
I would be concerned if the whole country was on the same page.
Were they not on the same page(more or less) just before invasion of IRAQ?
When we were fed false information about IRAQ?
When our critical thinking was clouded by fear?
And look where that show of unity got us.

Note: which would be worse?
Complete Totalitarian control or complete lawlessness?
They both sound bad.
I will take something in between

Liberals believe that everyone should be equal.
(That's what communism & socialism is based upon, also.)
If you work harder and make more money than a liberal, the government should take money away from you and give to the liberal.
Democrats, in general, believe that Everyone owes them.
You are correct that liberals care about freedom of terrorists and are against wiretapping.
