It would seem that only the antisense strand would be necessary to match the antisense RNAi to the sense mRNA and identify it for cleavage. Is the double strand necessary for the RNAi to be recognized and/or bound to the Dicer and/or RISC proteins?

Double stranded RNA is recognized by Dicer, then cleaved into smaller pieces of dsRNA. RISC will then bind the one strand of the RNA. It will look for complimentary RNA and degrade it. The dsRNA is necessary for recognition by Dicer and RISC.
