My washing machine was playing up, so I took off the back. Big bits of this concrete-like stuff was coming off, and I've just found a big curved piece which somehow has liberated itself from its original home.

What is it for? Will the washing machine work without it? Or is it time for a new machine?

Many manufacturers use concrete blocks as counterbalance since it can be molded to any shape that is needed and weighted if need be. It is much less expensive than any metal casting.

If it is not too badly broken it may be bolted back to where it is supposed to be. The repairman may even be able to repair the block easily or replace it with new.

It is more likely that this can be repaired so it would be worth it to you to call the repairman.

This is the weight put into the machine to stop it moving around too much on a spin cycle. It wont work without it, so you need to either get it repaired, or buy a new one.

hi,

the concrete part is the weight that prevent the machine from jumping around.

depending on your machine you can have more or less success using it without problem. check with a local appliance store if they can have the part, even used. if you are handy you can probably install it (with help).

often technicians offer a fixed fee for repairing home appliance.

Its the water ... there is soft and hard water .. and build up is cause by hard water. Before you get a new washing machine, get a repairman over to your place ... but, ask if there is a cost prior to checking your machine. And get a repairman that is working for the company your brand of your machine.

This is ballast weight to hold the machine down and to balance to load, it gets heavy.

You didn't say how old it was. I would look into a new machine.
