it depends on how tall cage the is on whether he gets hurt. i tried one of those 3 level crittertrail 3 but they are too high. mine kept falling too and from that far they can hurt themsleves so i took it back. if it's only about 10 inches tall he won't hurt himself. but sounds like u dont have a hamster ball for him & he wants out. thats why they try climbing--looking for ways out. get him a ball ($5)and let him run every night when he wakes up. (use tape on the crappy lid!) mine run for 2-4 hrs a day with breaks back in the cage for water every hour. they chew on the bars when they want back out.
u would probably know if he was hurt. he would limp or be bleeding or act differently.
ps: all hamsters should have access to a wheel. when they get older they sometimes don't care, but young ones need the exercise. the girl above me should put the wheel back. the only way a hamster would run himself to death is if he had a heart problem.
good luck!

Rodents in general like to climb and explore and be active. Does he have an exercise wheel? You might try building him a ramp or giving him some other (safe) stuff to climb on. Also, make sure he has safe and efficient chew toys-pet shops and Wal Mart have wood and bone chews for hamsters. He could also chew on a piece of rawhide if you have some for the dog (that has NOT been treated with formaldehyde!). Unless the cage top is more than a few inches from the cage floor, the drop from the top of the cage shouldn't hurt him.

lol My hamster used to do the same thing! Who cares about the wheel when he can climb the walls?!
Mine also fell a few times... never got hurt. I have seen a hamster that got hurt by being dropped (Don't give a 3 yr old a hamster!! I didn't do it but my aunt got one for my cousin -DUMB IDEA.) Anywayz, the hamster just sort of lay there and hardly moved. When it was put back in its cage it moved very little and seemed to have trouble using its back legs. It died shortly after that.
I think as long as your hamster acts normally after falling its fine. If it stops eating, acts depressed, or just acts "wierd" then you have a problem.
One thing you probably already do but what I did for mine coz I was worried about it was make sure the bedding was really thick in its cage. Mine never got hurt from falling, however one time it did get stuck - but they squeal when that happens.
Good luck!

This is normal and ok. If he doesnt have a wheel get him one, however the hampster will still still climb the cage. Another way for them to use energy is one of those plastic balls they run around the house in:)

He should be fine, so long as you keep bedding in the cage. If you don't have something for him to climb on, get something, like a second floor. They LOVE to climb. But if they fall, the bedding will brake their fall.

Hamsters like to climb on the bars. There's no need to stop your hamster, it entertains the hamster and the owner!!!

If he's hurt he won't walk away. Hampsters are pretty durable little things.

your hampster is ok or he wouldn't keep doing it!
ps- an exersize wheel isn't a good idea, my friend had a couple hampters + a wheel, and they ran themselves to death literally on it! (she has a new hampster now but she took out the wheel!)
