I actually WAS "homeless" for about 2 months. Although I was NOT the homeless kind you see on the streets. I just had no where to live, in an area where I didn't know so many people and my family is freakin NUTS so I didn't want to go back there. I was determined to make it though...I worked hard, had a good-paying job during that time too. I just happened to fall on hard times for a little bit.
Anyway, I stayed in a tent at the beach. There are areas for camping at State beaches and that's what I did. I essentially "went camping" for 2 months until I could pay off some debts and save money and get an apartment. I showered at the campground showers or showered at work (we had a dressing room with showers). And mind you, this was all during an insanely rainy winter.
It baffles me how people could choose to stay on the streets for so long. I only lived in the tent for 2 months and I was DONE with it...I was SO determined to get back on my feet...I often worked hard 14 hour days just to be able to save money AND pay off debts at the same time. You just gotta do what you have to do to survive. I'm the kind of person who won't LET myself get down like that.

NO one becomes homeless by surprise - when it becomes clear that it is going to happen regardless of efforts to avoid it then one needs to plan for ---WHATEVER?.
First one must decide not to just give up, next, sell most of your stuff. then put the rest in storage, for the day when a new start occurs.
Seek assistance from friends or family while seeking employment with Temp agencies and other Job assistance programs through the Employment Development Department. They have assistance programs and contacts for housing until permanent employment is acquired. Stay in one location maintain one mailing address for as long as possible and save as much cash as possible so deposits, rent, utilities and food for one and on-half month. Keep the job and pay current bills then work on past bills and repayment for those who assisted during the extended term of homelessness. I was fortunate it only took two years for my homeless period to end.

I've been homeless oddly enough three times in my life.
The first time I was 14 and my house burned to the ground - I won't say how - other then it led to the second homelessness incident......that time we were housed at a nasty hotel by the red cross.
The second time I was 15, removed from my home by child protective services and they literally put me out on the street because I would be 16 soon and the social worker said to me "We don't have a group home to put you in and you wouldn't do well in a foster home. So I'm going to let you out here. You probably have some friends to stay with." I lived on the street until I was 17. I got a job at a department store and worked as much as I could, cleaned in the employee bathrooms sink but could afford (with the money I made) food and to do laundry. I slept in this horrible old trailer with all the windows broke out that had been dumped in a city lot. I was emancipated due to abuse, which meant that I was legally an adult that was responsible for myself. BUT that means nothing when it comes to signing a contract. I couldn't get an apartment because I wasn't old enough to sign a lease. Bad situation. Which led me to the third time I was homeless....
At 17 I married a psycho. At the time he seemed rich to me because he installed floors and got paid in cash. He would buy me things and let me stay at his place. HE had a place which, again, I found attractive. He was ten years older then me. I had known him for two months when I married him. The day I married him he beat me so bad that he put me in the hospital. I was already a month pregnant -which I found out at the hospital! He also mentioned to me that he wasn't going back to prison. BACK TO PRISON??? I had married a convicted felon! Awful, awful situation. I stayed until my baby was a month old. He beat my *** every day. And not a little, a lot. I was sure that he was going to kill my daughter. One day he came home and for who knows what reason (as if there ever is one) he started beating me. This time he broke my pelvis, collar bone, right arm and fractured my foot! And when he started beating me, I had been holding the baby. Luckily I had gotten her into her crib and she wasn't hurt.
The police kicked in the front door and he took off. They took me to the hospital. While we were there the officer said, hey you know - you don't have to live this way....and he had me write down a list of things I wanted from the apartment. He went and got them. I never looked back. When I got out of the hospital that officer took me and the baby to a safe house for battered women where I stayed for about three months until I could find an apartment!
The funniest part is, I'm 32 now and you would never know by looking at me that I had ever been through any of this.

I'd probably go to a homless shelter. But the other night I went into the post office and I was thinking it would be a nice place for homeless people to go at night. It's warm and cozy.

I would try a homeless shelter to sleep and shower at night. after asking the public for money for a while, I'd use that money to get me a room at the Y so i can have some sort of normalcy while i search for a job.

I was for a short time, and I slept in my car, but now, I would go to one of my family, and if one of them wouldn't help, I would go to the sheriff's office and they would help me get a room and tell me where I could get some food, I know the sheriff here would, because I know of a couple of people that they did help.

Probably a church. They can be pretty good about helping you find a job. That would be my main concern. Anything to be self supportive again.
