Biodiesel is a methyl ester that is made out of a fatty acid and an alcohol. An acid or base catalyst can be used to speed up the reaction rate. The fatty acid component can come from free fatty acids or vegetable oil. Numerous alcohols can be used to make biodiesel but the common ones are methanol and ethanol. As for the acid catalyst sulfuric acid is commonly used, for the base catalyst potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, or pure potassium methoxide is used. After the biodiesel is made numerous steps can be used to purify it to meet a high quality standard. The biodiesel can be burned in anything that uses #2 fuel including diesel fuel and #2 heating oil with little or no modifications.
