get one of those build your own crystal kits from Michael's or Hobby Lobby, they really work, and they're big and pretty!

You can use any science book to get the answer, but it will take many tries to get a very beautiful crystal, and only certain types grow symmetrically.

there is also a very good crystal kit from the smithsonian i got a gift for a child that grew very good crystals in relatively short time.
bought it at walmart. good luck
