A rainbow flag has typically meant "as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning" from various cultures.
So starting in the 1970's is when these flags started appearing in gay pride parades and such. This is partly a message of the homosexual movement, to support diversity and inclusiveness.
Since this began in the 1970's rainbows have been more and more associated with homosexuality in the United States. People use this symbol to show that they are homosexual or support homosexual rights, etc.
Since it is used in this way commonly in the United States, rainbows are associated with homosexuality.
That is where the association comes from, not really with any relation to rainbows representing happiness.

If you had a football quarterback in the back ground of your avatar most people/guys might think you were "normal", but I would suspect that perhaps you were actually gay and in love with the pictured athlete. Then again, if your avatar character didn't look so "pretty" then adding a rainbow behind it might not seem so gay. Just sayin' . . .
And why do you care?
Maybe it's that gay guys have a code, and one symbol of "gayness" is a rainbow. Any "straight" guys who claim to know this must not really be straight.
Rainbows are actually very complex optical phenomenon, and it takes a little intelligence to appreciate all the associated facts. Some dim witted morons equate stupidity with masculinity. If YOU have a brain, just ignore them and realize they're also the one's who like to go off to war and get themselves killed. When they're gone, us intellegent "gay" [not] guys end up with more women to choose from!

Gay means Happiness.
A Rainbow is supposed to represant of blend of types or people in harmony. All races, all genders,.. all sexual preferences,.. equally accepted.
In the past it just meant you were Girly, and you were supposed to get mucho at the threat of being called a girl.
I like to wonder if you are helping hide a treasure at the end of that rainbow behind you XD Since your not a Lephracon,.. not a pot of gold like that,.. but maybe a Treasure Chest/Trunk of Jewelry or Statue,.. maybe more then one. But I have an Imagination,.. and that here seems rare unless your out to be mean to people.

1/ the original word 'gay' meant happy
2/ Gay and Lesbian movements have adopted the rainbow flag as their symbol, strangely so has South Africa!
3/ Have you ever seen a rainbow with a girlfriend?
4/ Your avatars hair-do is a little questionable, reminiscent of the Osmonds!

Consider this; GAY is a word from the english language that has been hi jacked, in its true meaning gay means carefree happiness,
it does not mean homosexual happiness, I am not homophobic, or gay, but i take exception to the misuse of the word, especially to the young and impressionable, to be gay is to be happy not homosexual.
IF Hetrosexual people were not happy about being called hetrosexual, what would we change our label to, probaly something as offensive as the misused word gay.
by the way your rainbow is a sign of happiness and in some cultures wealth, having always a pot of gold at the end of it.REGARDS LF

It's ironic that rainbows are the international symbol for gay pride because God used a rainbow to signify he would not destroy humanity again after the great deluge. It's now a rallying cry for all the "Sodomites" God buried before the flood.

That's someone's weird thing to get you all freaked out. God put a rainbow in the sky after the great flood that Noah, the animals, and members of his family suffered in the Bible. The next time someone makes comments like that about your rainbow, remind them of that, and tell them you like rainbows. Tell them if it were good enough for God and Noah, it's good enough for you.

I think its derrived from Wizard of Oz- "friends of dorothy" to somewhere over the rainbow... but I've heard a few different accounts, incuding that it was appropriated by a gay rights movement in San Francisco in the late 70's...
