Because it's taken longer to develop than any other, costs more to produce than any other and contains groundbreaking hardware like a BluRay drive.
Wait a couple of years and it'll be cheap. But then PS4 will be around the corner. ;)

Despite the fact that the PS3 sells at over $600, I am told Sony spent close to $800 to make each console. The PS3 calculates 40 times faster than the PS2, has games in hi-def, has a wireless controller that can be tilted to tilt in-game, and is supposed to be able to play PS, PS2, PS3 games as well as DVDs.
Basically, its much more expensive because Sony spent so much money on making them.

Simple. Sony figures the Playstation and PS2 were huge hits, and they can charge pretty much whatever they want and people will pay it. True, they have BlueRay technology, but this is a mixed blessing. BlueRay is better definition, but it also means that one scratch, and you have to buy the disc all over again. BlueRay CANNOT be buffed out. So if your discs need buffing from time to time, don't even think of a PS3--you'll shell out the money for the game time after time, and THAT is where they're trying to make their money.

pS3 is expensive becuase sony needs money and they think it's the best system cuz of HD DvD the nintendo wii could easily own pS3 and xbox360

because of the grapics the wifi which the xbox 360 dosent have the sixaxis (u can move the cotroller the way u want ur player to go) 60gb but the xbox360 only has a 50gb

B. (the real answer) It has a blue-ray disc system built in. The cheapest one, beside the PS3, that you can find is around $10,000. So, in actuality, you are getting an amazing deal if you buy a PS3.

blue ray technology, built in hard drive, wireless controls (built in as well), and online gaming with out buying extra device like the ps2.

because it was designed to read blue ray discs which sony is trying to push and the next medium. the disc drives cost alot of money thus the increase in price. go buy a wii instead the gameplay is better.
