In late 1970, Badfinger released the album No Dice. It was accompanied by the single "No Matter What," which also reached the Billboard Top 10. More notably, another track from No Dice, "Without You", became a bigger hit when recorded by Harry Nilsson in 1971 (where it reached the Billboard #1 slot) and Mariah Carey in 1993.
So the first band to record it was Badfinger :)
never heard of them hehe

It was written and first performed by Badfinger, but Harry Nillson's version is the best and most well known. Tragically two members of Badfinger committed suicide after a record company mistake meant they were accused of stealing money.
What idiot said Gilbert O'Sullivan?

It was Badfinger who first wrote and perfomed the song.
I can't believe that no one can spell the name Harry Nilsson. He had a huge hit with the song and it is that perfomance that us older people remember.
By the way, the version on X-Factor tonight was poor (in my humble opinion) despite the talent of the girl that sang it.

As others have said, this song was first recorded by Badfinger - but the version I know and love was Harry Nilsson's - it was in the charts during February and March 1972........I was a teenager then with my first serious girlfriend..........we went camping at Easter to Whitby (on the cliff-edge behind the abbey!) and we bought this single at, of all places, Woolworth's.........it was OUR song........ah..........memories......alas.....
