I worked at a buffet for 7 years while I was in high school and college. Although there is nothing that requires you to tip at a buffet, I strongly urge you to leave something. I promise you a dollar or two can go a long way, especially if the restaurant is a place you go to often - workers remember who tips and who doesn't. Like most of the answers on here state, $1 per person is fine, unless your situation requires lots of special attention (i.e. a baby that dumped some food on the floor). The usual 15-20% is not really expected, but a couple bucks is really appreciated.

You never have to leave a tip at any restaurant. It is a courteous thing to do. I always leave a tip, even at a buffet. The employees surely do not get paid much.
We have a chain of pizza buffet restaurants in my area called CiCi's. They only charge $4.50 for dinner and $1.50 for all the soda pop you can drink. It cannot get any cheaper than that, so leaving a tip does not hurt the bank roll.

It is considered proper etiquette to leave a tip. Since they did bring the drinks. And they clean the table. We usually leave between $2.00 to $10.00, depending on the amount of people at our table. The normal 15 to 20 % really does not apply because it is a buffet. And not a regular table where they would take and deliver your order.I always tip because while I was in collage I waitress-ed for a short period. And found out quick that you really do rely on tips.
Hope this helps!

yes you should ok they don't bring you the food but they sure keep your table clean.
actually they do more work then in a regular restaurant .
the server brings you your meal then cleans ups after you leave.
at a buffet they remove each plate as you are finished with it.
and most have endless coffee refills they are always moving from table to table non stop.
i think they work really hard and deserve a tip

I usually do. I'm not quite sure if you are "supposed" to or not. I wonder if wait staff in buffet-style places are paid like other waiters/waitresses are, which we all know is very very low. I usually leave a couple of dollars. Like others have mentioned before me, they do bring you drinks and clean up after you.

Of course. They take your trays, keep your drinks refilled, bring you straws, napkins, and if you happen to order something not on the buffet they serve it to you with condiments and then they come and clean up your table when you are gone. Don't you think that's deserving of a tip?? You would if it were you.

Yes, you should, since, like all restaurant servers, the bulk of their income comes from tips, and they get taxed on their tips weather they get them or not. $ 2 per person is an appropriate tip (that is, if their are 4 people in your party, leave an $ 8 tip for the server)

As much as my motto is if you don't tip you can't afford to eat out. This is where I draw the line. A buffett is just that..get it yourself. A buffett in my area the girls that clean up the table will ask me can I help you, I say no thank you. A handicap person may appreciate them. I get my food AND drink, and leave nothing. Sorry.

yeah, they clean the tables and stuff, and they make most of their money on tips, I pay at least 20% in tips. no matter where, so buffets are usually cheaper, so you aint gota tip as much, just think if you were working for tips, would'nt you want them, even if you just pased out the plates? that could be milk for the baby etc...

Not just is it a courtesy, but these people are making their living doing this. If they don't receive tips, they will be earning $2-$3 dollars an hour for working there. True, they don't have to work as hard as other servers who bring all the food, but you can't pay your bills on self respect.
