Seems extremely blunt to me - but it would depend perhaps on the job you went for. If someone dealing with members of the public and you have "grooming issues" then they might prefer someone who takes care of such things more effectively.

A silly example, a staff member looking a bit dishevelled and dropping dandruff each time he moves his head would not be a perfect choice for a 5-star restaurant's Maitre de.

If on the other hand you are driving a forklift dricvk in theback of the warehouse it ought not matter

All depends on the job I think.

Yes.

You do not say what sort of job you were applying for, but personal appearance is crucial for many jobs. In addition, employers may feel that appearance is important to the image of their organisation.

You have been told specifically about your appearance, but I am afraid that research shows that interviewers are often unconsciously affected by appearance too, including unfair things like skin blemishes, height and age that you cannot do anything about. In one way you are lucky because you have at least been told there is an issue. Before you next go to an interivew, get a friend to check over your appearance,, and what you are going to wear. I always go to the hairdresser before an important meeting (including interview): if you have hair that does not need the hairdresser again get a friend to check it. Incidentally, I also try to find a cafe near the office where I am being interviewed (Macdonalds are good for this purpose) to check my appearance in the loo mirror before I arrive. If I am travelling by car, motorway services can perform a similar function. And even as a man I take a hairbrush as well as a comb! (A battery razor is a good idea too for men. Presumably women take their makeup.)

Research shows that interviewers actually make their mind up right at the start of an interview. So I am afraid first impressions, including clothes and hair, really do matter.

I am afraid getting ready for job interviews can be quite an expensive business. It is not fair because it favours richer candidates who can afford things like clothes and expensive hirdressers. and those whose personal lives gives them good support. Not least it favours those in work, who already have business suits etc., over those seeking to re-enter employment. But that's life.

Many so-called Equal Opportunities Employers expect their managers to tell unsuccessful candidates why they have been rejected to justify fairness. Middle managers hate this because it makes them accountable. It is quite possible they picked on your appearance as a justification when they just preferred somebody else for their own reasons. But would you want to want for an employer like that anyway?

You need a thick skin while you are job hunting. I know, I've applied for too many jobs as I have been out of work several times. I also have a degree in occupational psychology, which is why I have been referring to research findings.

Good luck for your job hunt.

In London, yes. They are very picky about how clean and well dressed a person is. They judge people even by how their shoes look. Before I went there my friend, who had been there before told me to get a good expensive nice pair of shoes. They judge people a little differently then we do in the U.S.
