the best metal band fronted by a woman is ARCH ENEMY! Angela is the best.
As for Metal in the US, a lot of the new hard rock and rock is being considered metal and it isn't. Metal is going back to old traditional ways. After that grunge era in the 90's, we got into this nu metal ****. I like some of it, like slipknot, but I dont like the term nu metal because bands like Killswitch Engage, lamb of god, Shadows Fall, Chimaira, DevilDriver, Mastodon, and more are all bringing the true original metal back. Those are all American bands. You gotta realize that the black metal, power metal, and a lot of the symphonic goth metal stuff is not an American thing. That stuff has never been big in America as far as producing bands. It is coming more popular, but America has always been known for it's thrash metal and death metal. There just aren't many bands from American who write that kind of music. Nothing ever happened to them, they just never were in existence. All that stuff is from Europe. Opeth, Arch Enemy, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames. etc.

Hey man now take my word for it right now I am living in Sweden ok and metal does not exist here... yeah we gave birth to evanesence(or however you spell it) but I agree with you that really isn't metal. I got the oppotunity to go see an Iron Maiden concert here a few weeks ago and I can asure you that old rock like maiden, GN'R, and Twisted Sister are much more forthcoming than any new metal. And as for metal in America it was killed "by a little thing called MTV!!!!!" and so in the early 80s when motley crue became big they were one of the few metal bands allowed on the scene and now the list has been narrowed down so far that in truth not only metal but rock is dead in general... although there is help Europe has bands (Muse...) that have a new sound that is not so popular in America and is being raised here in Europe and so I believe we will have another (in rock terms) British invasion to revive rock

Rock in general has been slowly dying in the States - it is not the most popular genre anymore. (The purchasers of music in the US have been trending towards hip-hop and country, depending on the region.) In other countries these genres have not taken hold as strongly, so there is more diversity in the music.
However, there has been a slow revival of old-school metal, especially in the Steel Belt and Florida (the old homesteads.) Internationally, Europe is still holding its own (Portugal and France as well as Scandinavia. There's also an interesting growing metal scene coming out of India as a middle-class with some disposable income for things like electric guitars is emerging out of the tech boom.

The metal scene in the US has been on a steady comeback for the past few years. There are scores of great US metal bands out there today. To name a few: Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, Trivium, Nevermore, and Mastodon. A lot of the old greats are still coming out with great music, like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Cannibal Corpse. There are also lots of metal tours popping up every year in the US. There is The Sounds of the Underground Tour, Gigantour, and of course there is always Ozzfest. Granted, metal in the US is no where near as big as it is in other countries, but we get by.

I haven't heard any international metal so I wouldn't know. I will say that I have an iPod, and the majority of the songs on it are metal: mostly Staind, Nickelback and Evanescence.I think the 'metal scene' in the States is pretty diverse if all those bands fall under the same catefory. Like I said, haven't heard what's going on in other countries, but I'm pretty satisfied w/ the metal we have at home. You just have to find a band(s) that suit your tastes, because there's a lot to choose from.

It is so true that Europe/Scandinavia seems to have the corner on prog metal. Think Pain of Salvation, Riverside, etc...
A few american prog metal acts that come to mind are Enchant, Dream Theater, Death Soul Tribe, OSI, Planet X...but if you want to look for yourself and maybe discover some new sounds from the US, heres a good place to start:
Prog Metal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_progressive_metal_artists#A
Or broader: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_heavy_metal_bands_by_genre
Wikipedia is kind of nice, they give this list and have the nationality of all the bands, so it's handy.

Yeah, MTV and iTunes because the last time I checked, Staind, Evanescence, and Nickelback weren't metal.

There's Deicide, Morbid Angel and Suffocation, all from US. There's tons of more underground trash and grindcore bands from the US. Phobia is one of my favorites.

agreed^ but that's why there's Dir en Gray. Check 'em out if you don't know about them already and if you have fuse or vh1 classic, watch it skip mtv, there's practically no music left on that channel.
