When you lob the ball your not sure where the ball is going to land. Your opponent may think it's headed for the left side of the net but it is actually going to land closer to the middle. That gets your opponent further from the ball which therefore, hopefully, makes them miss it.
Plus lobbing is fun. :]

there are multiple scenarios in which you would use a lob. One is lobbing the ball over someone that is close to the net. Another would be when you can barely get to the ball so you must lob is to give yourself time to recover to the center of the court. Lastly, you could lob in order to push your opponent further away from the baseline

You use the lob when someone is at the net and you don;t want to give them the ball so they can put it away so you lob them and they dont have a good chance of getting it if it is a good lob

against an over matched opponent or a desperation shot that can be returned no other way. many good players don't practice lobs or lob returns very often so it can sometimes have surprising results. against pros it is a desperation shot that seldom works

when your opponent is up at the net. when you do a lob, you have to be very careful though. theres a high chance of you hitting it too hard and it goes out or you dont do anything with it and the opponent smashes it in the court...now your dead.

you use a lob when your opponent comes up to the net looking for a volley then you lob it and he has to run back and probably will not return it

when the opponent is near the net, just give him/her a lob and they will run back. When they run, you can prepare yourself to attack the opponent, because if he/she return the ball, it will nit be strong..
